Last checked: 23 October 2026. Clerk recruitments in courts often include a typing test that you only need to pass, not top. The current Punjab District Court Clerk recruitment (1270 posts, last date 4 November 2026) run by SSSC under the Punjab and Haryana High Court is a good example. It asks for 30 words per minute in English. This guide explains how that speed is worked out, using the formula printed in the SSSC notice, and how to prepare without wasting time.
Typing test at a glance (SSSC Punjab Clerk 2026)
| Stage | Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), after the written CBT |
|---|---|
| Part I | Spreadsheet test: 10 marks, 10 minutes, need 4 marks (40%) |
| Part II | English typing test at 30 WPM |
| Order | Typing is checked only if you clear the spreadsheet part |
| Effect on merit | Qualifying only. Final rank depends on CBT marks |
| Speed formula (as in notice) | (Number of words typed − Mistakes) ÷ 10 |
How the speed is calculated
The SSSC notice gives the formula as (words typed − mistakes) ÷ 10. Dividing by 10 means the score is your average net words per minute over a 10-minute passage. Every mistake removes one word from your total, so accuracy matters as much as speed. Always check the exact test duration and rules in the official notice or admit card.
Worked examples
| Words typed | Mistakes | Net words | Speed (÷10) | Result at 30 WPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 340 | 20 | 320 | 32 WPM | Pass |
| 330 | 35 | 295 | 29.5 WPM | Fail |
| 310 | 8 | 302 | 30.2 WPM | Pass |
| 400 | 105 | 295 | 29.5 WPM | Fail |
The last row is the trap: a fast but careless typist can fail while a slower, cleaner typist passes. To pass, you need at least 300 net words in 10 minutes. A safe target is 35 gross WPM with under 3% errors, which leaves a cushion for exam nerves and an unfamiliar keyboard.
What usually counts as a mistake
Each exam body defines mistakes in its own rules, and the SSSC notice does not list them in detail. In most Indian typing tests, these are commonly treated as errors:
- Wrong, misspelt or extra words
- Skipped words or skipped lines
- Repeated words
- Capitalisation and punctuation errors (some exams count these as half mistakes)
- Missing or extra spaces that join or split words
Treat this as general guidance and follow the instructions shown on test day.
A 3-week preparation plan
| Week | Focus | Daily routine (30–40 min) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Accuracy and posture | Home-row drills, no looking at keys, 5-minute passages at slow speed with near-zero errors |
| 2 | Build speed | Two 10-minute passages a day. Note gross WPM and errors, and aim to add 2–3 WPM each week |
| 3 | Exam simulation | Full 10-minute tests on legal or official-style English passages. Calculate (words − mistakes) ÷ 10 yourself |

Don’t ignore the spreadsheet test
Many candidates practise only typing and then fail Part I, which means their typing is never checked. Spend 15 minutes a day on basic spreadsheet tasks: entering data, simple formulas such as SUM, AVERAGE and percentage, formatting cells, sorting and filtering, and adjusting column width. If percentages trip you up, our percentage calculator is a quick way to check your answers while practising.
Test-day tips
- Arrive early and adjust your chair and screen before the timer starts.
- Do not stop to correct an old error if backspace is slow on that system. Keep a steady rhythm instead.
- Read a few words ahead of what you are typing.
- If the keyboard feels different, slow down by 2–3 WPM for the first minute, then settle in.
- PwBD candidates who cannot type at the required speed can apply for exemption with the prescribed medical certificate, within the time window given in the notice.
Who this guide is for
It is written for Punjab court clerk applicants, but the same net-words logic is used in many clerk and assistant skill tests. Always check the formula and duration in your own notification, since some exams use 5-minute tests or different error rules. For your preparation timeline, use the preparation checklist, and keep an eye on new clerk vacancies.
