Eligibility

Education and skills

  • A degree from a recognised university in India.
  • English shorthand at 110 words per minute.
  • Knowledge of computer operation with a typing speed of 40 words per minute.

All three conditions are checked during the tests and again at document verification, so do not apply on the hope of picking up shorthand speed later.

Age limit (as on 1 October 2026)

Minimum 18 years and maximum 30 years. Usual relaxation applies for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), physically challenged candidates and ex-servicemen as per Government of India rules. Dependants of freedom fighters get up to 5 extra years. Departmental candidates of the Supreme Court Registry have no upper age limit, but staff of other government departments, PSUs and banks get no age relaxation. Use our age calculator with 1 October 2026 as the reference date, and see category-wise age relaxation rules if you are unsure.

Selection process and exam pattern

Stage Details Time Max marks Qualifying
1. Objective test 100 questions: General English 25, General Knowledge 25, Judiciary provisions of the Constitution 25, Supreme Court Rules 2013 15, Computer knowledge 10 1.5 hours 100 50
2. Shorthand (English) Dictation at 110 wpm for 7 minutes, 45 minutes to transcribe; up to 5% mistakes allowed 7 + 45 min 100 50
3. Typing on computer English, minimum 40 wpm; up to 3% mistakes allowed 10 min 20 10
4. Interview Online or in person in Delhi – 30 15

There is no negative marking in the objective test. If many candidates clear it, the Registry will shortlist in a 1:10 ratio to vacancies for the shorthand and typing tests, and in a 1:3 ratio for the interview. The shorthand and typing tests are held in Delhi/NCR.

Shorthand marks are graded by error rate: no mistake earns 100%, up to 1% mistakes 90%, and so on down to 50% at 5% mistakes. A full stop error counts as half a mistake, as does a capital/small letter mix-up. If you want to see how typing tests count errors, our explainer on how court typing speed is calculated uses the same logic, and you can practise on the typing speed test.

Salary

Initial basic pay is Rs 47,600 in Level 8. On top of that you get Dearness Allowance, HRA (Delhi is an X-class city) and transport allowance as per central rules. In-hand pay depends on the current DA rate and deductions such as NPS and income tax, so treat any single “in-hand” figure online as an estimate. You can work out a realistic number with our salary calculator.

Who should apply, and a few honest tips

Apply only if you can already take 110 wpm dictation with under 5% errors. The written test is only 50% to qualify, but the shorthand stage is where most candidates drop out. Spend the next six weeks on daily dictation at 100 to 120 wpm, revise the judiciary chapters of the Constitution (Articles 124 to 147) and read the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, which carry 15 marks.
