Eligibility

Qualification and experience

  • Graduation from a recognised university.
  • Three years’ experience as Steno-typist, Judgment Writer or Stenographer in a government office or reputed organisation.
  • English shorthand at 100 wpm and English typing at 50 wpm on computer, tested separately.

Qualification and experience are checked as on the date you submit the online form. Experience is considered only if it is in proper format, mentioned and uploaded in the form, and shown in original at document verification. Candidates already in government or semi-government service must send the application through proper channel with an NOC addressed to the Registrar General within 15 days of the last date. Contract, ad hoc and daily-wage workers do not need an NOC.

Age limit (as on 1 January 2026)

  • UR and EWS: 18 to 45 years.
  • HP government employees: 18 to 50 years.
  • Five years’ relaxation is available only to bona fide reserved categories of Himachal Pradesh (except EWS) and HP persons with benchmark disabilities, where a post is reserved for them.

Since the posts here are UR and EWS only, outside-state candidates can apply against UR, but no category relaxation applies to them. Check your age on 1 January 2026 with our age calculator.

Application fee

Category Exam fee
Unreserved (UR) Rs 450 (including GST)
Reserved categories of HP (SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PH) Rs 300 (including GST)

Fee is accepted only online and is not refunded.

Selection process

Selection is through a competitive examination under Schedule IV (Part H) of the HP High Court Officers and Members of Staff Rules, 2015. The proficiency test has two parts:

  1. Stenography: 10 minutes of English dictation at 100 wpm. You get five times the dictation time to transcribe it accurately.
  2. Typing: 10 minutes of English typing on computer at 50 wpm.

Only 10% mistakes are allowed in the transcription and typed matter. A candidate with more than 10% mistakes is declared unqualified. Tests may be held at Shimla, and dates will be sent only by SMS and email, so keep your mobile number and email active. There is no re-checking of answer sheets.

Practise 50 wpm typing with an accuracy target of at least 90% using our free typing speed test. Our post on how court typing speed is calculated explains gross and net speed and how mistakes are counted.

Salary

The post is in Pay Level 11 of the HP pay matrix, Rs 38,500 to Rs 1,22,700, plus dearness allowance and other allowances as per state rules. Actual in-hand pay depends on DA and deductions at the time of joining; our salary calculator gives a rough monthly estimate.

How to apply

  1. Read the advertisement notice and the R&P Rules, 2015 linked on the High Court website (Recruitment section).
  2. Register on hphcrecruitment.in with a working mobile number and email.
  3. Fill the form and upload your graduation certificate, matriculation certificate (age proof), ID proof, experience certificate and category certificate if any.
  4. Pay the fee online before 11:59 pm on 7 November 2026 and keep a copy of the submitted form.

Only documents uploaded with the form will be checked at document verification, so upload everything you want counted.

Who should apply

This suits working stenographers and judgment writers with at least three years of documented experience who can already write 100 wpm English shorthand. With only three seats, competition per seat will be high, so treat speed and accuracy practice as daily work, not last-week revision. Note also that the advertisement says appointments are subject to the outcome of two pending writ petitions (CWP No. 6948 of 2025 and CWP No. 7805 of 2025).
