How to set your freelance rate
Rate = (Target income + costs) ÷ (1 − tax %) ÷ billable hours per month.
Not every working hour is billable. Time spent on emails, proposals, revisions and learning is unpaid, so most freelancers bill only 5-6 hours of an 8-hour day.
Tax and GST for freelancers
Freelancers with receipts up to ₹75 lakh can use presumptive taxation under Section 44ADA and pay tax on 50% of receipts (when most receipts are digital). GST registration is required once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in special category states); export of services to foreign clients can be zero-rated under a LUT.
